#3 COVID: One year on

 


1. pandemic: a disease that affects people, animal or plants around the world

3. wimpy: not strong, brave or confident
👉 It's difficult to find wimpy in a sentence.

4. sheer:(verb) change direction suddenly
👉 I thought the boats were going to collide, but one sheered off/away at the last second.
            
  (adj) used to emphasize how very great, important, or powerful a quality or feeling is; nothing except
👉 It was sheer coincidence that we met.

  (adj) extremely steep; almost vertical
👉 a sheer moutain side

5. kick in: to start to have an effect or to happen
👉 It takes half an hour for the medication to kick in.

6. genome: the complete set of genetic material of a human, animal, plant, or other living thing
👉 The Human Genome Project has several objectives.

7. vaccine: a substance containing a virus or bacterium in a form that is not harmful, given to a person or animal to prevent them from getting the disease that the virus or bacterium causes
👉 The vaccine was used to protect the whole population against infection.

8. outbreak: a time when something suddenly begins, especially a diease or something else dangerous or unpleasant 
👉 The outbreak of riot caused many people die.

9. feeble: weak and without energy, strength, or power
👉 A feeble cry came from the next door.

10. zoologist: a person who scientifically studies animals
👉 The zoologist had spent a long time living with monkeys.
